DOT'S DIARIES 2011

Wednesday 8th February

We are learning about the human brain in science. Genie asked a question before we started!

Genie said that she had been watching a nature programme on TV and she noticed that baby animals are able to walk soon after they are born.

Genie asked Mrs Redman why human babies are so helpless at birth and completely dependent?

We thought it was such a good question and couldn’t wait to find out.

The human brain, she said, is very complex and takes time to mature and we have to develop skills so that we can walk on two legs.

If babies waited in the womb long enough to be able to walk hours after birth, they would be too big to pass through the birth canal. This would mean that women would have to have very wide hips which would make walking and running very difficult.

So if humans were born able to walk like many animals, our mums would be huge! And they wouldn’t be able to run away from predators like dinosaurs and so humans would not have survived!
